Gordon takes aim on Schumacher

Jeff Gordon finished second to Mark Martin in the MBNA Gold 400 at Dover Downs International Speedway, but that is enough to close the American in on longtime Champion Spark Plug World Driver Rankings leader Michael Schumacher.

Gordon has finished in the top five 13 times in a row and in 17 of the last 18 races, making it very difficult for him to be caught in the championship, and increasing the likelihood that he will pass Schumacher for the lead of the Champion Rankings. In the rollover format each driver loses a set number of points each race and regains as many as he can by finishing in the top 10.

Schumacher, who did not race last weekend, will be in action in Germany for the Luxemburg Grand Prix at the Nurburgring this weekend. Not only will he be battling Mika Hakkinen for the Formula One Drivers' crown, but also Gordon and Alex Zanardi to retain his Champion World Drivers' title which he won last year. Other NASCAR Winston Cup Series drivers in the top 20 are Mark Martin in fifth, Dale Jarrett in seventh, Rusty Wallace in 16th and Jeff Burton in 17th.
