Half the field involved in massive wreck at Daytona

Jamie McMurray triggered a 22-car wreck after Jimmie Johnson got the No. 1 Chevy loose and McMurray bounced off of his teammate Kyle Larson.

The wreck collected all of the Hendrick Motorsports cars — Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Chase Elliott and Kasey Kahne

"I was in the middle and (McMurray) - something happened - and he went to the right and then Chase hit him and he slid back in front of me, hit (Larson) door-to-door. I thought we were fine but our momentum just carried me into (McMurray) and eventually turned him sideways and then the whole thing happened. I don't know what happened to (McMurray) for him to change lanes as fast as he did. But we're all dealing a matter of inches and once that started, it just collected everybody."

Other involved included Danica Patrick, Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Chris Buescher, Regan Smith, Reed Sorenson Matt DiBenedetto — and Brian Scott who went for a wild ride on top of the hood of Kevin Harvick’s car.

"Those guys got tangled up up there in the front and we were in the middle of it," said Harvick. "I had one car on my roof and everybody else kept piling in. It's just one of those things that it doesn't take much for it to all go south. It is what it is.

"You really think it's going to happen from Lap 1. It's really hard to make up ground. You're pretty aggressive when you're trying to make up ground. We were trying to stay in that front pack for the next pit stop. I just couldn't get aggressive.

"My feet were killing me in the race. It was really uncomfortable."

Kenseth wasn't sure what was happening in front of him: "I don't know what happened there. It look like it was (McMurray), somebody lost control but I don't know why. We had a really bad pit stop and it put us in the back and it should have been my sign to hang out in the back. Looked like it was finally settling in with no more three-wide. I was just going to try to work my way back up to the front."

I really don’t know what happened,” McMurray said. “I felt somebody get into my left rear…I think the 42 cut my tire down."

Other casualties included pole-sitter Greg Biffle, David Gilliland and Michael Annett.

Brad Keselowski, who led 66 laps before the wreck, was the leader at the time of the incident followed by Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and Casey Mears.

There were 23 cars remaining on the lead lap when the race returned to green on Lap 101.
