Following a trip to the wind tunnel in Detroit, Mich., the Morgan-McClure Motorsports team returns to New Hampshire International Speedway to participate in the upcoming Winston Cup event. With only nine races remaining on the schedule for the 2000 season, the team is hoping to find a little magic somewhere with a few top-fives or possibly a win. Much controversy surrounds the 300-lap event to be held at a track that took two of NASCAR's bright young stars earlier this season. Bobby Hamilton will drive the No. 4 Kodak MAX Film Chevy on the 1.058 oval with a mandated one-inch restrictor plate.
Bobby Hamilton: "I understand what they (NASCAR) are trying to do. The way I see it, we are going to make 500 to 550 horsepower, maybe, or whatever the number is. A Busch car makes about 540 horsepower. Well, we lost Adam (Petty) up there in a Busch car. I think some of the drivers have forgotten that. "The Winston Cup cars are definitely faster, so this is a step in the right direction. I think it is just a testing deal for NASCAR to see what can be done. I am not really against it at all. Actually I am for it. It will be a definite change, but this move will remove horsepower and make the cars more like the Busch Grand National cars, except for a better body. The rest will be up to the drivers. So it will not be as bad as people think. I don't have a problem at all with New Hampshire. I have had some of my best races there. I almost won a race there a few years ago. I qualified in the top-five three or four times in a row. One race came down between me and Ernie (Irvan) and Jeff Gordon, we were just the class of the field. That was back in 1997, I believe. I had fun racing those guys that day. "We just have not hit the right combination with this car there yet. This car has not ever run that good at New Hampshire. I think with what we are learning here, that we might find the right deal. I just do not feel bad about going there. It is a flat track. I should run good. I just don't have hang-ups about going. It is a tough track. It is a tough place to pass other cars on, but it is tough for everybody."
