MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 1, 2001) -- Virginia native Hermie Sadler has experienced many ups and downs in the past few months on and off the track. The highs included watching his brother Elliott win his first Winston Cup race and the challenges included having his two year old daughter diagnosed with autism, and failing to qualify for his second career Winston Cup race at Martinsville Speedway. This weekend's goal is to turn the tides.
According to Sadler, "We're not done fighting yet. Even though we missed the race at Martinsville we accomplished a lot, on and off the track. We put together a team and a major marketing plan in a matter of weeks. Winston Cup racing is the toughest form of auto racing in the world. We know it takes a lot of time and preparation to be competitive. We will be better at Richmond this weekend. It seems like a year has past since we were in Martinsville."
How has Sadler dealt with his recent round of adversity?
"The last couple of months have been very trying but everything happens for a reason," stated Sadler. "I'm a stronger person and my family has grown closer. We're just being optimistic about what lies ahead. I have a great opportunity with the Virginia Lottery and being involved with the racing and marketing has been like a dream come true. They have some great promotions surrounding their efforts in NASCAR. The Virginia Lottery is a major source of funding for our school systems and that's something that all of us Virginians really appreciate.
"I am hoping and praying for a good weekend. We feel as though we have done everything we can to prepare for this weekend. The rest is up to me," concluded Sadler.
Question and Answer Session With Hermie Sadler
You're more involved in the marketing with the Virginia Lottery than you've been with sponsors in the past. What's that like?
"The Virginia Lottery is fully aware of the importance of NASCAR racing in Virginia. They know Virginia's two major tracks attract a lot of fans from Virginia and from across the country. Their focus is to capitalize on the NASCAR fans' loyalty. The Lottery is going to focus on games and promotions all year that target the NASCAR fans. I've learned a lot more about the sponsorship side of the racing business. The learning never stops in NASCAR because things are constantly changing."
The Lottery is hosting several honorary pit crew contests. Is it any different from what some of the other sponsors are doing?
"We actually had a drawing at Martinsville the morning of the race for the honorary pit crew person. It was open to the general public and most of the promotions other sponsors launch may or may not include everyone. We wanted a race fan to get a once in a lifetime opportunity and we were successful. The excitement on the winner's face was awesome. That's something I'll never forget and I know the winner will not forget it either.
"The Lottery has tents on display at the race track when we're competing. They are going to be at Richmond International Raceway this weekend. The fans can purchase lottery tickets and register to win cool prizes. I think that is pretty cool. There are so many ways to leverage a NASCAR sponsorship and that's what makes the marketing aspect of this sport fun."
This weekend's race at Richmond International Raceway is slated for Saturday, May 5. Television coverage will begin on FX at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Qualifying for the event is scheduled for Friday, May 4th at 3:30 p.m. Easter Time.
