INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 4, 2000) - Jeremy Mayfield was hospitalized with a head injury Friday after crashing his car during a practice session in preparation for Saturday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Mayfield was admitted to Methodist Hospital and listed in stable condition with what was described as a closed head injury, speedway officials announced about three hours after Mayfield spun out in his No. 12 Mobile One Ford and struck the third-turn concrete retaining wall.

Dr. Troy Payner, a member of Methodist's neurological staff, said Mayfield was conscious and responsive but that the head injury would prevent him from driving in the 400.

The left side and rear of Mayfield's car were heavily damaged in the crash, and his team decided to switch to a backup for Saturday's race.

Teammate Rusty Wallace drove Mayfield's backup car during Friday's final practice, and the team planned to have Kyle Petty drive the car in the race. Petty failed to make the 43-car starting grid in his No. 44 Hot Wheels Pontiac.
