Kasey Kahne charted the fastest lap in Bud Pole qualifying for NASCAR Nextel Cup teams at Kansas Speedway. Kahne's lap of 178.377 mph dusted the field by nearly two miles per hour; securing him his fifth pole of the season.
It's the shot in the arm the No. 9 Evernham Dodge team needed after an early wreck last weekend at Dover International Speedway put a damper on their title hopes.
"It was a heck of a lap," said Kahne. "Really fast, the car cut really, really well. It just kept wanting to turn, I didn't even have to use my hands. It's really good, we have kind of shined on these 1.5-2 mile tracks this year."
Kahne's teammate Scott Riggs knocked out the only other lap over 176mph with a 177.936 mph; which grabbed him second.
"I am proud of everyone at Evernham Motorsports they are doing such a good job," said Riggs. "The 9 and the 19, everybody helps me.they were ragging me a little bit saying I would have a good lap as long as I got it in third gear, cause I missed it last week. Just proud of them, we picked up a lot from practice."
Jimmie Johnson will start third after touring the 1.5-mile track at 176.887 mph. Johnson has some ground to make up in the Chase this week, he is currently eighth trailing first by 136 points.
"I probably left 2/10ths out there," Johnson commented. "I was pretty loose in one but got through there alright, three and four were pretty loose for me. To finish the lap though and still have something to complain about being second, that means we are on the right track."
Non-Chase racers Brian Vickers, JJ Yeley complete the top five.
Forty seven cars attempted to qualify for the forty three car field; failing to make the show were Scott Wimmer, Chad Blount, Kevin Lepage and Carl Long.
The only Chase racers staring outside of the top-14 are Mark Martin (19th) and Denny Hamlin (25th).
