"The guys did a good job," commented Kahne about his Dodge Dealers/UAW crew. "I felt like the care was great, it was a little free through one and two and three and four felt really good. I don't know. We have been working really hard; these guys have been doing a good job."

Kahne's lap bested the field by nearly one mile-per-hour. "We tested here a week and half a go and the test went really well," said Kahne, driver of the No. 9 Evernham Motorsports Dodge.

Penske Racing's Ryan Newman will start on the outside pole after touring the 1.366-mile track with a lap of 169.555 mph; giving Dodge an all front row for the race under the lights at Darlington Saturday night.

"We haven't been to victory lane at Darlington yet," reflected the No. 12 Alltel driver Newman. "But it's typically a good track for us as far as leading laps and running up front."

Greg Biffle starts third with a lap of 169.222 mph in his National Guard Roush Racing No. 16 Ford.

"Racing at Darlington is a lot of fun," said Biffle. "It's a unique track and it makes tire management very important. It will be important to make sure the car handles well on old tires because that track wears your tires in a hurry."

"It's another night race for us, which is always fun for the fans and good for the team because they get an extra day off," added Biffle as the Cup drivers race Darlington for the first time under the lights.

"I love Darlington," expressed Sadler. "It's a track that has a ton of history and I look forward to going there every year. This season we only go there once so we really want to have a great race since there in no second chance later in the season.

"I really want to win one there because that means I would have beaten the best. To win at Darlington says a lot."

Forty-seven cars attempted to make the forty-three car field. Failing to make the show were Robby Gordon, Johnny Sauter, Tony Raines and Morgan Shepard.

Notably, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. qualified a disappointing 39th. Cup point leader and Busch pole sitter, Jimmie Johnson, rolls off ninth.
