Nemechek Looking For a Continuance in Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Oct. 6, 2004) -- With an extra bounce in his step after posting top-10 finishes in two of the last three Nextel Cup races, Joe Nemechek feels his U.S. Army team is on the verge of reaching its potential after suffering through a string of bad-luck mishaps and malfunctions.

"We've been good all year, just haven't had the finishes to go with the performances," said Nemechek. "We're seeing some results and it sure feels good. We can even get better.

"We have our own chase -- to finish this season as strong as possible and go into next year with momentum and confidence. The ingredients are here and I can feel it all coming together."

Nemechek's No. 01 U.S. Army/USG Chevrolet placed sixth in New Hampshire (Sept. 19) and seventh in last Sunday's race at Talladega. Had it not been for a restart glitch in Dover (Sept. 26), Nemechek would most likely have three straight top 10s heading into this weekend's Banquet 400 at Kansas Speedway.

"Kansas is an extremely fast track, just the way we like it," said Nemechek. "We've been good at the 1.5 milers, including at Kansas' twin track in Chicago where we finished eighth back in July. I also had a fourth-place finish in Kansas a couple of years ago (2002)."

What also has Nemechek feeling upbeat is the 01 Chevy that he will have in Kansas. It will be the same car in which he finished sixth in New Hampshire and the same car he had in Pocono where he captured the outside pole and led the first 31 laps of the Pennsylvania event.

"It's like anything -- when you feel comfortable in something -- you don't want to change," said Nemechek. "The Army car we're bringing to Kansas is stout -- another great building effort by the guys at MB2."

Nemechek and the U.S. Army team were happy about their performance last week in Talladega where they grabbed the pole and ran up front for the majority of the 500-mile race.

"Winning our first pole of the season was pretty special," said Nemechek. "I was so happy and proud for the guys. They've worked hard during the tough times and the enthusiasm never wavered. The pole also got us into next year's Bud Shootout and we're very proud of that. I was also happy with the way we ran on Sunday - we were there for most of the race, but got trapped in the wrong lane at the end."
