Third Straight Podium Finish for SpeedSource Mazdas
Alton, VA - SpeedSource secured a position on the podium for the third time in a row this past weekend at the VIR 250. Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell took the second place finish in their No. 70 Mazda RX-8. The race held this past Saturday at Virginia International Raceway brings the 2004 SpeedSource Mazda podium count to four. Three of the four podiums for the team are first place finishes.
The profound team effort and handling ability of the RX-8 resulted in a finish ahead of the highly contesting Turner Motorsport team. This now places SpeedSource second in team point standings for the Sport Touring class. The SpeedSource team has more first place finishes than any other team in the Sport Touring class.
The SpeedSource team once again walks away from a race gaining a better appreciation for their chosen effort and for their team as a whole.
"All around it was a great race. It was really a strong performance by the team. We were really pleased with the track. The handling on the RX-8's is better than most the cars out there, no matter what class. It shows how good the car is," stated Tremblay.
The team also fielded two new drivers in the No. 65 car, Harry Kintzi and Wade Williams. Kintzi, a Porsche club driver, was able to adapt to an unfamiliar car and track in fierce competition. Kintzi joined the SpeedSource team for just one race.
Williams, although new to his Sport Touring class competitors, has been on the Grand Am Cup team as crew chief all season. Williams got the opportunity to drive what he has been working to perfect all season.
Tremblay says of Williams' performance, "Wade had a strong race and some good stints. Having him in the Mazda will not only be a benefit to the team but to his personal understanding of how the car operates. It really is important to have him familiar with the entire process and we are pleased to have had him done so well."
Marcello Abello and Nick Fanelli co-drove the No. 66 Mazda RX-8 and came in directly behind teammates Kintzi and Williams. In the No. 68 car David Tuaty and Scott Schlesinger encountered difficulties at the Virginia track but plan on a solid race at Barber.
As for the upcoming race at Barber Motorsports Park, SpeedSource believes that their preparation on the Mazdas will be just as effective as it has been all season. The SpeedSource team received their first Sport Touring win ever last year at the Barber track. With the success of the Mazdas this season they find no reasons that will hinder their ability to arrive on the podium once again.
"Barber should suit our cars and we are looking forward to drive the Mazdas there. It's a beautiful track," Tremblay adds.
