CHARLOTTE, N.C., (April 18, 2000) -- This weekend, the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule takes its first open date to celebrate Easter. While most drivers are making travel arrangements for the holiday weekend, Kenny Wallace, driver of the Square D/Cooper Lighting Chevrolet, is planning to do nothing.

"I'm so busy with sponsor functions and team responsibilities during the year that when I have an off-weekend, I do what I want to do, and that means nothing," said Wallace. "I get up when I want to get up. I go to lunch when I'm hungry. I hang out with my family at home. That's about it. Winston Cup drivers have the longest season in professional sports. When I finally get some time off, I lay around the house and do absolutely nothing.

"Every morning at the track, I wake up to the sound of engines blaring in my ear," continued Wallace. "I don't need an alarm clock, I get up with the roar of race car motors from the garage. This weekend, it'll be nice to wake up to the whistling from the birds that have moved into the chimney of my house. That'll start my day off right. Once I wake up, I just want to play with my kids and celebrate the Easter weekend with my family."

Wallace believes that open weekends during the Winston Cup season can be therapeutic to a driver and his team.

"These breaks from our grueling schedule are important to a driver's sanity," said Wallace. "We have very little free time because we're representing Fortune 500 companies 24 hours a day. I have to be on for 34 race weekends and over 20 sponsor appearances, which doesn't include the media requests, hospitality visits and everything else that comes with this deal. The lifestyle does take its toll on my mind and body, but it's something that I'm happy to do because it gives me an opportunity to drive at the Winston Cup level. At the same time, I also need time to recharge my batteries every once in a while."

But Easter weekend hasn't arrived yet, and there's still some work to do. The Square D Racing Team will test April 19-20 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

"Life will never give me a week off," commented Wallace. "It doesn't want me to get use to free time because I might like it too much. But, it's important that we use this time to focus on our team. We need to use this open week to get better. The Square D Racing Team has some business to do up in Richmond, but after that, you'll find me on my couch."
