When he was topped by Kevin Harvick’s lap of 196.421mph with 15 minutes remaining in the session, the Blue deuce returned to the track for one more shot and best the No. 4 Chevrolet.
“27.40,” crew chief Paul Wolfe told Keselowski after his seventh and final lap. “Nice job.”
Keselowski was fastest on the board for the first 50-minutes in practice, then returned to the 1.5-mile track in Q-trim and posted a lap of 196.278 mph — just short of Harvick’s mark.
Carl Edwards’s run of 196.249mph was the best for Toyota. The Ganassi Racing Chevrolet of Kyle Larson (196.128 mph) and Joey Logano (196.000 mph) rounded out the top-five fastest times.
Jamie McMurray (196.893 mph) was sixth quick followed by Ryan Blaney (195.879 mph), Erik Jones (195.702 mph), who is subbing for the sidelined Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle (195.560 mph) and Kurt Busch (195.376 mph).
“I gave us a throttle trace to look at and discuss,” Busch said. “Good job guys.”
Kyle Busch was 11th on the speed chart with Jeff Gordon (19th) and Martin Truex Jr. (20th) bringing up the rear among the other Chasers.
Just before the 50-minute mark, there was a caution for debris at the exit of pit road. Landon Cassill’s 32 laps were the most run by a competitor during the session but no driver posted a Best Consecutive Lap Average.
