Kurt Busch on Fontana pole

Kurt Busch posted the quickest lap in time trials at California Speedway. His lap of 184.540 earned Busch his fifth pole this season and eighth of his career. Busch also sat on the pole for last weekends Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"We tried a little something different this time," said Busch. "We're good on Friday we just need to get a little better on Sunday. The Penske/Jasper power down the straightaway is what I needed today.

"It was a really good run today, and the car was really good back here in the spring. I put a blindfold on sometimes and go out there and I hit a good lap."

Brian Vickers was second with a lap of 184.049 mph.

"I feel good," said Vickers. "Anytime you practice fastest, it makes you feel good going into qualifying, but it doesn't mean anything. We had a good car in practice. It is just hard to adjust the car trying to guess what the pace will be in qualifying."

Clint Bowyer was third, "I thought we were going to get it but we lost a little bit. That will still be a great starting spot for us on Sunday."

Scott Riggs and Martin Truex, Jr. complete the top five.

Notably, Bill Lester attempting to make his third Cup start wrecked on his warm-up but attempted to make a time trial run anyway but his car was too badly bruised. He will miss the Sony HD 500. Kertus Davis, Todd Kluever and Chad Chaffin will join Lester on the plane home.
