Harrah's Back on Track for Las Vegas

Harrah's will enjoy home-field advantage this weekend as Robby Gordon Motorsports heads to Las Vegas for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway flying the familiar purple and yellow colors of Harrah's.

For a team that has experienced its share of misfortune in the early going of the 2005 season, the hope is that Vegas will indeed be lucky for the No. 7 Harrah's entry.

"We need a good run in Las Vegas, and despite the fact that we have had a few issues to start the season we should put together a good performance for the 3,000 or so guests that Harrah's will have in attendance," said Gordon. "We've got a full weekend planned with Harrah's guests and management, and this weekend is one of my personal favorites of the season. There is no city that we race in that I enjoy more than Las Vegas."

Gordon's personal best of 13th at the Las Vegas track came in 2000.

"Las Vegas is a handling race track," Gordon said. "We tried a lot of different things when we tested there in January, and we got the car to a point that it felt really good through the corners. We weren't the best car there during the test, but by the time we left I really believe we were as good as anyone in the turns, and better than most. If we're able to combine that with a good power down the front and back stretch, and also get good engine reliability, we'll be fine.

"It's no secret that we have had a few issues with engines, and while having an engine failure is frustrating, I'm confident we'll work things out. The main issue has been isolated and the engine department has already produced a package for Vegas that should do the trick."

Qualifying for the race is Friday at 3:10 p.m. (PST), and Gordon must be among the eight fastest cars attempting to qualify that were not among the top-35 in owner's points from the 2004 season. There are currently 49 cars entered, of which 14 will be competing for the eight available positions.

The 400-mile race is scheduled to begin Sunday at 12:10 p.m. (PST).

"Nobody ever said operating a race team was easy, and from the day we started this program more than a year-and-a-half ago we have worked a lot of long days and nights to overcome issues much more challenging than a couple of engine failures. The good news is that we had a lot of power at both California and Mexico City before we broke, and when we sort out a few things in this area we'll be just fine."
