Riggs Looking For a Reversal of Misfortune
LAS VEGAS (March 2, 2004)--If you're experiencing a bout of bad luck, Las Vegas may not be the city you want to visit.
But forScott Riggs, who has faced a spell of bad breaksduring the start of his rookie campaign in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, Las Vegas is the city where he is hoping for a reversal of misfortune.
TheNo. 10 Valvoline Chevrolet driveris banking on Las Vegas Motor Speedway to help put an end to his recent woes when he competes in Sunday'sUAW-DaimlerChrysler 400.
"This is a strong, solid team," Riggs said. "I know we cancompete on the track every single week. We've just been the victim of some bad luck lately. The start to this season hasn't affected our drive to win.If anything, it's made the Valvoline team more hungry for success."
Riggs' Nextel Cup debut was soured when he was caught in a 10-car accident during the Daytona 500. The following week he spent his day at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham fighting a tight race car. His finishes were 34th and 31st respectively.
"We're better than the results," Riggs explained. "We had a great run going in Daytona, but got body slammed early in the race and then later collected in someone else's mess. In Rockingham we had top-10 practice times and qualified in the top-20, but just missed the setup we neededon race day.
"We haven't had the start we wanted or had expected. But this is a new team and we have a learning curve to face. Being presented with some of these challenges early in the season has really helped usbuild that all-important team chemistry."
The Valvoline team spent two days testing at Las Vegas in late January and anticipates the session will help pave the way to a solid finish.
"We found what we need to do to be successful," Riggs said.
"Las Vegas is a unique place, not like any we've been to this year. It's a driver's track -- fast and fun to drive. But you still have to consider strategy and do well on pit road to get up front.
"The whole team is ready to get there, start racing, and see what we can do. We, like everyone else, hope that Las Vegas will bring us luck --we just want it for different reasons."
The 400-mile, 267-lap event will be televised on FOX, beginning with a pre-race show at 2:30 p.m. EST.
