LJ Racing, Lepage part ways

Kyle McDoniel SONOMA, Calif. (June 27, 1998) Coincidence turned to convenience Saturday at Sears Point Raceway when a series of events put Tommy Kendall, who failed to qualify the No. 46 First Union Chevrolet, into the No. 91 Little Joe's Chevrolet for Saturday's Save Mart/Kragen 350.

Kevin LePage, who announced an upcoming deal to drive for Roush Racing Friday, was out of his ride in the No. 91 when owner Joe Falk made the decision to hire Kendall on a one-race deal for this Sunday's event. "I'm trying to do what I think I had to do to ride up front," Falk said, "just like Kevin thinks he had to go to Roush's to run up front. He told me on the way out here he was going to Roush's. He gave me two weeks notice, I didn't take that two week notice."

Because of a traffic jam on Thursday, things were made substantially easier for the crews involved.

NASCAR Winston Cup team haulers are usually lined up in the garage area in descending order of owner points, but the order was shuffled substantially because of the tangled traffic. As a matter of chance, the haulers for the two teams involved ended up side by side.

It didn't take long for the metamorphosis to start taking place. The No. 46 was loaded on the hauler, but many of the gray shirted SABCO crew members of the No. 46 car were in the adjacent stall, hard at work on the LJ Racing No. 91.

"Tommy doesn't like this car (91) very much," said Felix Sabates, owner of Team SABCO. "The 46 was a good race car. We're taking everything we can and then some out of the 46 and putting it into the 91. We're taking the seat and shocks and engine, springs, swaybar, driver.

"Joe Falk has always been a great guy. Whenever, we've had a problem, he offers us his cars to get in the field. He's helped me when he can and I help him when I can." By the start of final practice, the familiar First Union logo was on the sides of the No. 91 and Kendall was in the driver's seat.

The immediate futures of both LePage and the No. 91 are uncertain at best, but don't expect to see them together again.

"We're done (with LePage)," Falk said. "Kevin said if we put Tommy in the car he was done. I don't know who'll drive our car next week."
