DALE JARRETT --88-- UPS Taurus (Finished 3rd)
"We were back there like Ryan was talking about, but we started back there so we knew we were in for long day and almost had to have a perfect day to really think about getting in the top five. We made a call after seeing what our fuel mileage was doing and in looking at past history at what the last 100 laps has in store. There are usually quite a few cautions, so we took a gamble knowing that our best chance and maybe only chance to get ourselves in the top five today was to get there somewhere around lap 200 and save as much fuel as we could. We inherited the lead and were able to stay there for a while. My car was a little better on longer runs. The caution flags were helping us save fuel, but they were hurting me on the restarts, but it was a good day for us."
PASSING IS STILL TOUGH HERE? "Yeah, it's definitely still tough. I was surprised. I would have never thought we would have been down on that bottom groove with what used to be the apron, but that's where we ended up running towards the end. If they would have put a little banking in that, it might have been, but it's an off-camber deal to me with the way it looks in the race car when you're going around there. It's still difficult. I mean, you could still pass once somebody's handling went away. When everybody was on fresh tires it was difficult, but it made for a pretty exciting race today."
WHAT ABOUT THE SURFACE? "I'm not sure if it was the race track, because it's hard to tell when you're running around out there, or if it was the rubber and that was building up and the combination of that. Like Ryan said, you just couldn't get a hold of it. If you hit it, your car just took off. We had that at some other places occasionally when the rubber builds up on the track. I don't know if that's the case. You'll have to go out there and look at it, but that seemed to me more of like what we've seen at places like Martinsville and other places like that, where the rubber will start to build up and if you hit it, you just take off. But this was even worse. I didn't see Tony's deal, but I saw Kyle Petty. He was one car in front of me and it looked like he just got up a little bit. I was thinking he might lose a couple spots and when I looked in my mirror he was into the wall, so once you got there you couldn't save it. That's what it looked like."
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO WHEN THAT STARTS HAPPENING DURING THE RACE TO FIX IT? "Stay out of it. I don't mean to be a smart-aleck, but you've got no choice. They kept trying to blow it off and everything else, so that's why I believe it was rubber build-up on it because even though they would blow it, it was still there and you couldn't get into it."
