Gilliland Surges in Sonoma, Looking for Luck in Loudon
Team Trying New Set-Up at One-Mile Flat Track
Statesville, N.C. (June 22, 2010) - New Hampshire Motor Speedway is worlds apart from Infineon Raceway, but David Gilliland hopes his team's performance in California carries over to this weekend's race in the Northeast. The Taco Bell Ford team earned a 19th-place finish at the Sonoma, Calif., road course last weekend and likely would have finished much higher if the car didn't get spun off track by a competitor late in the race.
Sunday's Lenox Industrial Tools 301 will be the first of two events at the one-mile flat track in Loudon, N.H., this season. This weekend's race will be Gilliland seventh Sprint Cup start at NHMS. His best finish is 28th.
Comments from Taco Bell driver David Gilliland on New Hampshire Motor Speedway and team's Sonoma effort:
"New Hampshire is a lot different from anything we normally race on. It's small, tight and really flat. Definitely, horsepower doesn't make as big a difference at a track like Loudon, and neither do aerodynamics at just a mile track. It's all about handling and we'll be trying some new stuff this weekend.
"Loudon in the past hasn't been one of my best tracks, but hopefully we can turn that around. We have some momentum right now from Sonoma and we're getting better. This weekend will be a big test for us. We really want to improve on our last performance at a flat track like this.
"We kind of struggled at Phoenix, which a lot of the set-up stuff people relate to Loudon. So, I don't know really what to expect going to Loudon. In Phoenix, we just kind of struggled with the car. I think the front-end geometry package that we took didn't work, so we're taking something different to Loudon. We'll just have to see how it is.
"We had a really good effort last week at Sonoma. (Crew chief) Randy Seals and the whole Taco Bell Ford team gave me a great car for the weekend and we ran competitively the whole race and were looking at a top-10. Unfortunately, we got spun late in the race and there just wasn't enough time to make up all that lost ground with just 12 laps to go.
"But I'm really proud of the team and the effort that we were able to put on the track last weekend. Despite what happened, we still had a top-20 finish (19th). It was great to be up there and be competitive. I know this team has the capability to do that week in and week out."
