Jeremy Mayfield said at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last weekend that he doubted he'd be back in the No. 19 Dodge next year. His wish may have come true sooner than expected.

Evernham Motorsports has announced that Bill Elliott will drive the No. 19 Dodge at Watkins-Glen this weekend. Representatives said that no long term decision has been made as to whether or not Mayfield would field the No. 19 Dodge in another race this season.

A team press release stated that this weekend is an effort to try and get the No. 19 back on track.

"This team has a great deal of potential and we just haven't met the expectations this year," said Ray Evernham, president and CEO of Evernham Motorsports. "We will do whatever we need to get this car in the show for Watkins Glen. It's important to our sponsors and it's important to this team. Having Bill in the driver's seat gives us this guarantee. I believe in our system, our process and our people, and am committed to getting this program where it needs to be."

Multiple sources have confirmed that Mayfield is in talks to drive for Bill Davis Racing next season and that Elliott Sadler has been in negotiations to take over the No. 19 at Evernham Motorsports.

A string of disastrous runs has left the No. 19 Dodge and Mayfield 34th in points, two years ago that team vied in the inaugural Chase for the Nextel Cup. Since then things seemed to come unglued within the organization.

The situation between Mayfield and team owner Evernham came to a head when Mayfield ran commentary to a group of reporters at Chicagoland Speedway how Evernham had been frequently absent from the race track this year.

A few days later Evernham and Mayfield appeared together in the media center, and Mayfield recanted his comments.
