McMurray leads second Cup practice at Martinsville

Jamie McMurray posted the top speed in second practice at Martinsville Speedway.

After 69 laps completed during the 55-minute session, McMurray posted a fast single-lap speed of 96.780mph. On Friday, the driver of the No. 1 Ganassi Racing Chevy qualified 14th.

Joey Logano, who will start second in Sunday’s Goody’s 500, was second quick with a lap of 96.730mph followed by David Ragan (96.671mph), polesitter Martin Truex Jr. (96.652mph) and AJ Allmendinger (96.622mph).

Rounding out the top-five were Matt Kenseth (96.558mph), Carl Edwards (96.519mph), Ryan Newman (96.509mph), Tony Stewart (96.474mph) and Jimmie Johnson (96.420mph). Stewart, who is looking for his fourth win at the half-mile track, completed 71 laps — the most in the exercise.

Chase drivers outside of the top 10 included Denny Hamlin (11th), Kurt Busch (12th), Kevin Harvick (13th) and Kyle Busch (16th).

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who wrecked in qualifying and was forced to bring out a back up car posted the 18th-quick lap. Ryan Blaney (25th) was the fastest rookie.

Truex also posted the top speed in the Best 10 Consecutive Lap Averages with a speed 96.198mph. Stewart was second in the category with a speed of 96.135 followed by McMurray (96.111mph), Kyle Larson (95.999mph) Johnson (95.907mph) and Kyle Busch (95.891mph).

Edwards, Harvick, Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon, who expects to be making his last start at Martinsville, rounded out the top 12 in Best 10 Consecutive Lap Averages.
