DARLINGTON, S.C. (Sept. 5, 1999) - Michael Waltrip suffered his second hard impact of the 1999 season, when contact with Jimmy Spencer sent him sliding into the inside retaining wall at Darlington Raceway in the 50th edition of the Pepsi Southern 500.
Waltrip, who was passing Spencer at the time for 18th position, walked away from the accident unhurt. The wreck, which took place on lap 133 resulted in a 41st place finish.
Up to the point of the incident, Waltrip's race day plan unfolded flawlessly. A disappointing qualifying effort on Friday left him with a 38th place starting position. But, with race set-ups, Waltrip had been one of the faster cars all weekend, and it showed on Sunday. During the first 50 laps of the race, Waltrip took his Philips Chevrolet to the 23rd position, and then during the first caution, his pit crew grabbed another spot, moving him to 22nd.
By advancing through almost half of the field, Waltrip placed himself in a good position to race on the lead lap through the next segment of the 500-mile event. But, with almost two-thirds of the race remaining, the incident with Spencer erased all that progress and any optimism for the rest of the day.
The finish dropped Waltrip to 21st in the NASCAR Winston Cup point standings with 10 races left. The series continues next Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va.
