Riggs Awaits Finishes That Match Performance

BROOKLYN, Mich. (Aug. 17, 2004)- Scott Riggs is ready for the Valvoline race team's results to start representing its performances, and hopes to start that trend Sunday when he guides the Valvoline Chevrolet around Michigan International Speedway in the GFS Marketplace 400.

On several occasions this season, Riggs has had top-10 performances ruined when bad luck or misfortune has stepped in his path. Since the second half of his rookie season began, he has been frustrated with such situations, but improved performances by the team have kept him optimistic.

"Our results are never indicative of our performances and that's frustrating for everyone involved," explained Riggs. "We should've probably had three or four top-10 finishes since Daytona-maybe a couple of top-fives.

"The thing to keep in mind is that performance wise we're improving, and that's what helps keep our heads up. If we continue having solid runs, we'll keep learning things and eventually the bad luck with go away and solid finishes will follow."

In Daytona's Pepsi 400, Riggs contended for a top-10 finish before a miscue on the final green-flag pit stop forced him to settle with a 21st-place result. The following week in Chicago, Riggs started 16th and quickly drove his way to the front of the field, where he remained until being swept up in the aftermath of an eight-car accident halfway through the event. Two weeks later in Pocono, Riggs sat in seventh-place with five laps remaining when a faulty battery quickly moved the Valvoline Chevrolet to 22nd.

"It's been fun running in the front of the pack and having some performances to be proud of, even if we haven't had the results we've deserved," said Riggs. "Valvoline's over-the-wall guys have been incredible all year and we've finally been able to show them off a little too."

In Riggs' first trip to Michigan this year, he started and finished 20th.

"We started 20th in June and dropped quickly to the back," he commented. "Doug (crew chief Doug Randolph) and the team figured some things out and made some adjustments and we drove back to 20th. This time we'll take what we learned and drive to the front looking for that finish."

Randolph knows that progress now means improved results later.

"Where this team sits now compared to the beginning of the season is incredible," Randolph said. "Great results still aren't there, but performances capable of great results are and that's what matters-you can't have good finishes without good races."

Sunday's event will be televised live on TNT beginning with pre-race show at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
