Mike's NASCAR Notes 6/20/97 (mike@nascarfans.com)

Who's hot

Mark Martin has moved to second in the Winston Cup standings by finishing no worse than fourth in the past seven races. . . . Derrike Cope's best four finishes of the season have come over the past five races. . . . After a three-race streak of finishing 27th or worse, Dale Jarrett has rebounded with a third- and a sixth-place finish. He has nine finishes of sixth or better in the season's 14 races. . . . Ted Musgrave has been 11th, sixth and fourth in the past three races after being 23rd or worse in five of the previous six. . . . Michael Waltrip has been quietly consistent. He has finished 17th or better in the past six races. . . . David Green has been the highest-finishing rookie driver in three of the last four races.

Who's not

Since finishing fourth at Talladega, John Andretti has struggled with finishes of 30th, 29th, 40th and 37th. . . . After six straight top-20 finishes, Ward Burton hasn't finished better than 34th in the past five races. . . . Joe Nemechek has suffered a similar slide. After five straight top-20 finishes, he has been 36th and 41st in his past two starts.

Quotes about the new California Track

"It's impressive. If you look back, everthing Roger Penske does is first class....Guys who are thinking about building new ones, it's going to be difficult to top this one." - Terry Labonte ``The old Ontario track was great. There was nothing wrong with it. The timing just wasn't right. We weren't as big. The sport wasn't as big. Now, we're back. You can almost see Ontario from here. Timing is a funny thing. I think we'll be here for a while this time.'' - Dale Earnhardt

Answers to Questions

I had a fan write and ask me to answer a couple of questions:

1. Why doesn't Chrysler choose to compete in nascar racing?

2. What will Ford race when they stop making Thunderbirds?

Reply to #1.

Chrysler chose to market their motorsports money toward the sports car and drag racing market back in the '70s and '80s. This trend continues today, with their participation in the sedan road-racing series. They just didn't feel that their dollars were as well-spent in NASCAR. However their recent victory in the Craftsman Truck series, and their participation in that series since its inception, indicates a softening of the stance against stock car racing. I've seen a picture someone scanned in of a NASCAR version Intrepid sedan. Maybe we'll see it in the near future..........

Reply to #2

I'm no expert by any means, but I think the Ford teams will be running a heavily-modified (from stock appearance, that is) Ford Taurus. That's what most of the rumor mills seem to be indicating. It makes no sense for the Ford teams to be running a car (Thunderbird) that Ford does not sell. "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday" is the name of the game.

Thanks to JP Evans for those questions. _______________________________________ NASCAR Fans Website http://www.nascarfans.com
