Skinner, Lowe's to stay with RCR through 2002 By Shawn A. Akers
HAMPTON, Ga. (March 14, 1999) Separate agreements will keep Mike Skinner and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse in the Richard Childress Racing stable through 2002.
Skinner, driver of Childress' No. 31 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, has been inked to another three-year contract, beginning next year, to drive for RCR. Lowe's, which is currently in an option year of its deal with Childress, announced its renewal of its NASCAR Winston Cup Series sponsorship as well during a press conference Sunday morning at Atlanta Motor Speedway prior to the running of the Cracker Barrel 500.
The 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year, Skinner is the series' current points leader with two top-5 finishes in three races this season.
"It's a great contract, and we are very pleased with the overall commitment Lowe's has given us throughout our partnership," Skinner said. "Now that I have my health back, we have started making some progress.
"I have a great car owner in Richard Childress, who has supported me tremendously. This is where I want to end my career. I am blessed with a great organization in RCR and a great sponsor in Team Lowe's."
Lowe's has sponsored the No. 31 Chevrolet since Skinner's rookie season. The company recently purchased the naming rights to the former Charlotte Motor Speedway for the next 10 years for the hefty sum of $35 million.
"I appreciate the tremendous commitment Lowe's has shown this racing program since the beginning," Childress said. "Bob Tillman (chairman and CEO of Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse) and the people at Lowe's back us in our desire to hire Mike Skinner as a rookie in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series three years ago, and I think everyone would now agree that the decision was a good one.
"The team that has been assembled in the No. 31 shop is committed to doing everything they can to put their race car into Victory Lane before the season's out and challenging for the lead throughout the year."
"We are very excited about continuing our relationship with Richard Childress Racing," Tillman said. They have been outstanding representatives for our company, our employees and our customers. This partnership solidifies our commitment to the sport, in conjunction with our relationship with Lowe's Motor Speedway."
