Public relations representatives of the National Stock Car Association were quick to issue a statement downplaying alleged leaks of what the contents of the long awaited Earnhardt Investigation would contain.
On Thursday August ninth, the Associated Press reported that the investigation would put the contributing factors to Earnhardt's death as the lack of forward protection in the cars that compete in the Winston Cup Series. The lack of a frontal crush zone contributes to the head whip that causes Basel skull fractures.
NASCAR quickly responded on August tenth by issuing the following statement.
"Our investigation is on schedule and we will discuss the results at a press conference once it is complete. Speculation prior to that time serves no useful purpose".
Since the death of the seven times Winston cup Champion on February 18th during the final lap of the Daytona 500, controversy surrounding the cause of death and the investigation have been rampant.
Initially indications were that the failure of a seat belt was contributory to the sustained injuries.
In the aftermath of that disclosure, Bill Simpson, the founder of the company that manufactured the belts used by Earnhardt began receiving death threats.
Simpson vehemently defended his products, and recently resigned his position his position as Chief Executive Officer of the company that bears his name, citing the stress of the situation was too much to bear.
The loss of one of racings greatest legends has put tremendous pressure on the sport to attempt to put a rational explanation on a tragedy.
Computer analysis and reenactment of the impact, stress tests on equipment, and countless interviews will not change the fact that Dale Earnhardt is gone, and the loss of his life defies explanation.
NASCAR has indicated that the investigation is on schedule, and the intended release of the report should be made public by the end of the month.
Dale Earnhardt will be posthumously inducted into the national Motorsports Hall of Fame on September first, the evening before the Southern 500.
