NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol halted due to rain, postponed

The race will resume at 1 p.m. ET tomorrow on CNBC.

The start of the race was delayed by roughly 30 minutes due to inclement weather, but only 31 laps were completed before the rain returned. The field ran under yellow until Lap 38 when they were brought to pit road and put under their covers.

NASCAR fought to dry the track and after a 1:24.04 stoppage, the red flag was lifted and cars were re-fired at 10:42 p.m. They ran under yellow from Lap 39 to Lap 48 before a massive downpour hit the track yet again. That was enough for NASCAR to call it a night at 11:20 p.m.

Presently, Kyle Busch is scored as the race leader. At the initial start, Denny Hamlin got the jump on pole-sitter Carl Edwards. Rookie Chase Elliott then briefly took control, leading 14 laps before Busch asserted himself at the front of the field.

Behind him, the running order is Elliott, Blaney, Hamlin, and Matt Kenseth. The rest of the top ten is as follows: Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano, and Kyle Larson.

There are 35 cars on the lead lap and all 40 are still running.

“We haven’t really even got going so I think until we get some laps and get racing it is really kind of hard to say how it’s going to go,” Chase Elliott said. "I’m looking forward to the NAPA Auto Parts team getting back going tomorrow.”
