Whatever the No. 12 Penske Dodge team of Ryan Newman's has found in the water at Atlanta Motor Speedway - they need to start sharing the love. Newman landed his fifth consecutive pole at AMS and his second back-to-back pole of the season.

"We went faster this year than we did last year with less down force," said Newman. "The conditions were just right for us when we went out."

Newman's lap of 194.690 mph paced the field by nearly one mile-per-hour.

"I look forward to the race," Newman said. "I am just happy to be here and glad we did a great job in qualifying with the impound rule. I am going fishing tomorrow that's all that I know."

Bobby Hamilton, Jr. was second quickest with a lap of 193.785 mph.

"The temperature of the track, the air got heavy," said Hamilton. "It affected a lot of cars. We went out early and we got lucky. We've got to keep building our team into a consistent team and go after it."

Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 Chevy team didn't seem too affected by the penalties from last weekend. They slapped their ride into third with a lap of 193.184 mph.

"It was really amazing how much grip was in the track," said Johnson. "I didn't know what to expect when qualifying started but then I saw the lap that Ryan (Newman) ran and I thought well OK the track has a lot of grip.

"We went out at the right time."

Carl Edwards and Kasey Kahne complete the top five fastest times.

"I'm kicking myself a huge amount," said Edwards. "I don't know what it looked like, but that felt like a really good lap all the way through turn three. I just tried to hard in turn three and it was loose. I knew I should have been more conservative, but it was either all or nothing there and I'm just glad we didn't wreck."
