http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/speedway/4330 ===== At the press release of Ford being named the "Official Truck of NASCAR", the F-150 truck wasn't the only Ford making news. The Taurus, which has replaced the Thunderbird as Ford's entry in NASCAR's Winston Cup Series, was, not surprisingly, a hot topic.

If there was a theme to be gleaned from those who are headed for a new set of wheels, it was uncertainty.

"We have a lot of work to do," said Dale Jarrett, who drives the No. 88 Quality Care/Ford Credit Ford. "With it being developed very late and announced very late, with just a few months to get it ready and we were in the middle of a championship battle and trying to win races, we didn't have much time to work on it until the season started to close down.

"Now we realize that there are some things we have to get done on it. A lot of work is going to have to be put forth. But I see the Ford teams working very well together and hopefully we can cut that learning curve down some. It's still going to take the first third of the season to learn what the car really wants. It could take longer than that."

"We have a lot of good guys in the shop who are young and eager and ready to go racing, as well as myself for '98," said Bill Elliott, who won a series title in a Thunderbird. "The only thing I'm a little concerned about is changing to the Taurus, and what will occur as a result of that change."

Even Dale Earnhardt had a comment, albeit a reluctant one.

"You'll have to ask a Taurus driver, I don't know," he said. "I've never seen one -- well, I've seen a four-door one. No comment." (NASCAR Online) ===== Country.Com has a great article on NASCAR racing history at:

Preview:

At the end of 1965, NASCAR was licking a few wounds. The Chrysler boycott had produced a box office disaster. Attendance figures at the major NASCAR tracks were a far cry from the record breaking year of 1964. ===== Here's an excellent read; a story called "One Southern Gentleman", about Ned Jarrett, written by Tom Higgins of MCI Racing:

Preview:

Ned Jarrett raced the wheels off his cars in the good old days of stock car racing, seizing two NASCAR championships amid the fender-bending fury of such legends as Junior Johnson, David Pearson, Lee and Richard Petty. Now he's one of the most esteemed commentators in network television, proud father of a two-time Daytona 500 winner, and just about the nicest man you could ever hope to meet. ===== Mike Irwin (mailto:mike@nascarfans.com) NASCAR Fans _______________________________________
