Here's a note from John, one of our readers, concerning DW's missing the Charlotte race:
"On Friday going down (to Charlotte), John Boy from the John Boy and Billy (radio) show suggested that the track could use a promoters' provisional as in the days of old. He suggested that fans call the speedway and voice their opinion. A little latter someone from the speedway called the radio show to explain that there was no promoters provisional any more....and that the fans had shut down the phone system at the speedway with their many calls. On the way home today, John Boy read an article from a newspaper saying the secretaries stopped counting after about 3000 calls. It didn't help DW but it shows the fans voice can be heard."
Thanks, John! ========== Jayski hears from a reliable source that Bill Elliott and Dan Marino will team up for 1998 with Jerry Nadeau as the driver and First Financial as the primary sponsor. Sprint may be an associate sponsor. ========== Kevin Lepage will be replaced by former motorcycle road racing champion Kevin Schwantz in the BGN #88 Ryder Driver Recruiting Chevrolet for the rest of 1997 and 1998. Owner David Ridling feels Lepage is headed to Winston Cup ride in 1998 and wanted to start working on their 1998 deal now.(NASCAR Online). Jayski hears Lepage may go to the Winston Cup #91 LJ Racing Chevy in 1998 full time (Jayski) ========== Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 1998 on the 75,000-seat Kansas Superspeedway in Kansas City, Kansas. Plans are that the track will open in 2000 on a 1,000 acre site in Wyandotte County. International Speedway Corp(ISC)(NASCAR), the track's developer, hopes to add an additional 75,000 seats sometime after the track's opening.(AP) (Jayski) ========== Plans for a new U.S. Road Racing Championship (with the support of NASCAR behind it) where announced on Thursday (10/2/97) in New York after a meeting of track owners, promoters and series officials, including NASCAR President Bill France, Jr. However, Andy Evans, $10 million investor in SportsCar since buying the series (formerly IMSA) last year, believes the main purpose was to put him out of business and is threatening to sue, accusing NASCAR and France, Jr. of being "de facto cartel in violation of anti-trust laws."(USA Today thanks Tony), Andy Evans was on RPM2Nite saying bascially the same that a lawsuit was in the works (Jayski) ========== "The newly remodeled Atlanta Motor Speedway is taking advantage of the fact that many race fans will be heading through Atlanta to nearby Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway next weekend. AMS, which has added a trioval and flip-flopped the track, is holding an open house Saturday from 9am to 5pm"(Speednet/Jayski) ========== From the Rusty Wallace Fan Club meeting: Rusty said that they will be announcing a new associate sponsor in the coming weeks, he said that it would be Lennox Heating & Cooling and that the logo would go around the bottom of the car. Rusty was asked about a two car team and he said that there were no plans for a two car team but that his team would be working together with some teams sharing information and that they would make a formal announcement later. (Jayski) ========== More than 50 drivers applied for entry Monday for the ARCA Winn Dixie 500k, including defending champion Tim Steele who will be racing for his fourth-consecutive win.
Steele won his third consecutive race and 10th of the season last weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. A win in Saturday's Winn Dixie 500k at Talladega Superspeedway would assure Steele of back-to-back 11-win seasons.
Steele currently leads the Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series by 465 points over Frank Kimmel.
Also filing for entry Monday was two-time Daytona ARCA winner Andy Hillenburg, who was passed by Steele on the final lap of last year's race. (Charlotte.Com) ========== Women buy furniture all the time, but drive race cars? Patty Moise does both, and that's the primary reason she'll find herself with a full-time ride in NASCAR's Busch Series next season.
Rhodes Inc., an Atlanta-based furniture acquired by Richmond's Heilig-Meyers nearly a year ago, confirmed yesterday it will sponsor Moise's Michael Waltrip-owned car in hopes of attracting more female auto-racing followers, thereby selling more furniture.
It's a two-year deal, and although Heilig-Meyers officials declined to reveal financial terms, The Wall Street Journal reported this week the commitment will be about $1.5 million. (GVA) ==========
