MIAMI (August 14, 2000) – Steve Park cleared a major hurdle last weekend when he scored his first NASCAR Winston Cup Series victory at Watkins Glen International in the bright yellow Pennzoil Monte Carlo.
After winning in his home state, the Long Island native is now looking to reward his sponsor with a “home race” victory when he returns to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Nov. 10-12 Pennzoil 400.
“It was just fantastic to win my first NASCAR Winston Cup race in my home state,” Park said. “It would be just as great to give Pennzoil a victory in their own race -- although I’m hoping to score a few more in between!”
Park edged Mark Martin by three-tenths of a second to win Sunday’s Global Crossing @ The Glen, the closest Winston Cup finish in WGI history. It also was the first Winston Cup victory for Pennzoil, which has sponsored cars in NASCAR’s premier division since 1990. Earlier in the season, Park reached another milestone, capturing his first Winston Cup pole at Bristol, driving the No. 1 Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt.
“What would be a better way to end the season, after having our first career pole and our first career victory, then to cap the entire year with a victory in the Pennzoil 400?,” Park asked. “I can’t think of a better way to show our appreciation for Pennzoil’s support, and the confidence they’ve had in us.” The 32-year-old driver qualified second and finished 12th in the 1997 Miami 300, the NASCAR Busch Series finale. He finished 19th in the inaugural Pennzoil 400.
“It’s a beautiful track in a great area,” Park said of Homestead-Miami Speedway. “It’s also a very challenging track. I’ve had some highs there – qualifying second for the Busch Series race – but I’ve also hit the wall pretty hard there in testing the Winston Cup car. It’s one of the most challenging tracks I’ve ever raced on.”
If Park proves successful, he will have no trouble finding a place to celebrate.
“I love coming down to South Florida,” Park explained. “I love going down there to take a break from the racing scene, and I’ve spent a few New Year’s Eves down there. I’ve always had a blast partying there.”
Park and his NASCAR Winston Cup rivals will battle in Lennox Pole Day, Friday, Nov. 10, when the Budweiser Pole and top 25 positions are set for the Pennzoil 400. Saturday is final Winston Cup qualifying and the running of the Miami 300, the 2000 NASCAR Busch Series finale.
Tickets are still on sale for the Pennzoil 400 and Miami 300. Call the ticket office at (305) 230-RACE, or purchase tickets online at the official Speedway web site, www.homesteadmiamispeedway.com.
