Three NASCAR Winston Cup teams penalized for fules infractions at The Winston.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 20, 2003) - Three NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams were penalized for rules infractions that occurred at The Winston all-star event held this past weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway, NASCAR officials announced today.
Lee McCall, crew chief for the No. 40 Dodge of Sterling Marlin, was fined $10,000 for an improperly attached weight that was found by NASCAR inspectors during pre-qualifying inspection. He was in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and Section 12-4-Q (Any determination by NASCAR Officials that parts and/or equipment in the Event do not conform to NASCAR rules) of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rule Book.
Chad Knaus, crew chief for the No. 48 Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson, received a $1,000 fine for an unapproved air directional device that was found during pre-race inspection. He also was in violation of Section 12-4-A and 12-4-Q of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rule Book.
The No. 88 team had its engine confiscated by NASCAR officials as a result of a violation of the single-engine rule, which mandates that all teams use the same long block engine assembly for the entire Event (practice, qualifying, race). The team had requested an engine change per the guidelines set forth in the rule book, but NASCAR officials deemed that the change was not warranted. In addition to being moved to the rear of the field for the unnecessary engine change, NASCAR confiscated the engine.
