This Week in Ford Racing:
February 16, 2010
The stretch of races to start the season not only tests the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers on the track, but the overall organizations of every team in terms of getting the race cars from Daytona to California to Las Vegas. Peter Visconti, who handles logistical operations at Roush Fenway Racing, talked today about the transportation planning for the next two races.
TRANSPORTATION TIMELINE:
Monday, February 15 - Transporters leave Concord, NC, for Fontana, CA. at 11 p.m. Eastern time.
Thursday, February 18 - Transporters arrive at Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, CA.
Friday, February 19 - Las Vegas cars are loaded and leave for Fontana to switch out after the race.
Sunday, February 21 - Six-car hauler arrives. Cars switched out in Nationwide Garage.
Tuesday, February 23 - Six-car hauler returns to Concord, NC.
Tuesday, February 23 - Team haulers travel from Fontana, CA, to Las Vegas, NV.
Sunday, March 1 - Team haulers begin travel from Las Vegas, NV, to Concord, NC.
PETER VISCONTI, Logistical Operations, Roush Fenway Racing
HOW WILL THIS CAR SWITCH WORK EXACTLY? "We'll load our Las Vegas cars this Friday and then we'll head out to California in a six-car carrier that will have all four of the primary Roush Fenway cars for that race. We'll do the actual switch at the track either Sunday night after the race or Monday morning in the Nationwide garage, but if that doesn't work out for some reason, we'll find another place close by. We've done this in parking lots before, so it's something we've got a pretty good handle on."
SO THE PLAN IS JUST ONE PRIMARY CAR PER TEAM? "Yes. All of our teams are using the same back up car for Fontana as Las Vegas, therefore we will be transporting four primary Las Vegas cars to Fontana in one hauler. It will also contain other supplies for Las Vegas, such as drinks and things like that, but we'll have two drivers in the transporter who can share duties behind the wheel and get there and back as soon as possible."
WHAT KIND OF PLANNING DOES A TRIP LIKE THIS ENTAIL? "Planning for these types of trips is usually started 4 to 5 weeks in advance. Drivers, vehicles, transporters, hotel rooms, credentials, weather, motors, all come into play and are discussed at our Monday morning meetings weekly if something comes up that needs to be addressed. This Daytona-California-Las Vegas stretch is probably the toughest due to the timing, but they all take the same amount of planning. The fact that these three races are back to back make it a bit more challenging, but we also do this for Phoenix/Texas, Kansas/California and Texas/Phoenix during the year."
