PHOENIX (Oct. 29, 2003) -- Witha positivedebut in the No. 01 U.S. Army Pontiac behind him, Joe Nemechek is looking to build on his recentsuccess at this weekend's NASCAR raceb^0x0013 the Checker Auto Parts 500.

Nemechek is coming offa solid performance at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he placed 10th in Monday's rain-delayed race.

"I think we all know the potential is there for a lot of success," said Nemechek, who will drive the U.S. Army car in the final three races of 2003 and in 2004."I can already sense good team chemistry and I am really looking forward to working with this team.

"I feel the start we had in Atlanta gave the Army team a much deserved lift. They've had a tough year with Jerry (Nadeau) getting hurt, working with different drivers and a bunch of bad luck on the track. Hopefully, that's all in the past and we can use the Atlanta result as a positive springboard for the future."

When Nemechek gets to Phoenix International Raceway (PIR), he is hopingto break a performance jinxand capitalize on an excellent test session conducted at PIR last week.

"For some reason, I haven't had a lot of success at Phoenix," said Nemechek. "It's a pretty tough track, but it's also one thatI like. I've had pretty good qualifying efforts, but not the finishesI would have liked. However, based on what we learned in the test sessionat Phoenix I know we can run well."

U.S. Army crew chief Ryan Pemberton also feels that Nemechek and the team have laid a strong foundation in the short time they have been together.

"You never know how long it will take to establish an understanding of each other when there's a new driver," said Pemberton. "But it was apparent from the get go that Joe and everyone on the Army team were on the same page. It's been a smooth transition and I know it will only get better. He brings plenty to the table with his experience."

Nemechek will give the Army team added knowledge of the one-mile oval at PIR. He will also compete in Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series race in his No. 87 entry.

"Though the cars are different for Busch and Cup, I feel it's an advantage because you run more laps and get a better understanding of the race track and tire wear. We've been competitive in Busch and I feel it can make a difference in transferring knowledge for the Cup race."
