Target Dodge Parks Early at PIR, Finishes 42nd AVONDALE, Ariz. (April 12, 2008) -The Target Team's eighth start of the 2008 season was looking promising in the early running of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 Saturday night at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR). The No. 41 Target Dodge was a little too tight through turns three and four but Reed Sorenson didn't want to make any major changes as he was happy with the overall handling of his race car. Unfortunately, after getting hit from behind and into another car on lap 133, the No. 41 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) Dodge was never the same and eventually broke away from Sorenson's grasp on lap 148, hitting the outside wall. The damage from the impact forced the team to retire from their eighth run of the season way too early. The Target car was scored in 42nd place by the conclusion of the night race.
Sorenson and team lined up 20th to take the initial green Saturday. In the early running, Sorenson radioed his team to tell them the car was a little snug going into turns three and four, but he didn't want to make any major changes because the overall handling of the car was fine. He proceeded to race up as high as 12th before the car seemed to develop a lack of grip. By lap 115 of the 312-lap competition Sorenson was telling his team the right rear of his Target Dodge was very unforgiving and just all over the place.
Crew Chief Jimmy Elledge called for air pressure adjustments during a four-tire, fuel stop on lap 116 to address the loose handling and then sent Sorenson back on track in 12th place. It was less than 20 laps later when the team's night got really turned around on them as a multi-car accident unraveled on lap 133 that didn't initially involve the No. 41 CGRFS Dodge but as cars slowed to avoid the wreckage Sorenson got hit from behind and tossed into another car.
The damage sustained from that incident was eventually the team's demise as it seemed to throw the overall handling of the car out of whack. After pitting multiple times for repairs, Sorenson was back on track returning to green-flag racing on lap 141. He radioed his team to say there was something still amiss with his race car and less than 10 laps later the No. 41 Target Dodge was in the outside wall. The damage sustained from the wreck forced the team to call it a night.
Sorenson dropped four positions -- to 31st -- in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver ranks. He is 271 points out of 12th place -- the final cut-off position for the Chase.
