"After accomplishing what we did last weekend at New Hampshire, I am really looking forward to going to Pocono -- a place where this team really runs well. Back in 1995, when I was driving the #28 car for Robert Yates Racing, we went to this event and won it after overcoming a tough season to that point. I'm not saying that's what will happen again, but it is definitely a good place to visit for this team."
Dale Jarrett on Pocono Raceway
DJ Looks to Return to Peak Pocono Performance . . .
Dale Jarrett looks forward to going back to Pocono Raceway and redeeming the #88 UPS Racing Team's performance at the 2.5-mile triangular-shaped track. Jarrett cut down a tire on lap 53 that resulted in a dramatic, fiery crash. Jarrett was running sixth at the time of the accident. The team's past performance at Pocono is just one reason he looks forward to revisiting the track.
"Pocono is a great track for this team and for me," Jarrett said. "We had a little bad luck in June and it was really unfortunate because we had a car that was handling really well and I would have liked to see how that turned out, but we're going to hopefully see that this weekend. We figured some things out on our suspension program over the last couple weeks and it feels like we're making progress in regards to our chassis."
Jarrett has 11 top-10 finishes in the July race at Pocono. Aside from a 41st-place finish at the July race in 2001, Jarrett has finished in the top-10 every July race dating back to the 1991 Miller 500.
Two of Jarrett's three wins at Pocono occurred during the track's July race (1997 and 1995).
Jarrett has 16 starts in the July race at Pocono, and has led laps during eight of those 16 races for a total of 270 laps.
Strategy Plays in Parker's Hands . . .
Pit strategy played into the hands of crew chief Shawn Parker last weekend at New Hampshire International Speedway. Picking the right time to pit and what to do played an important role in the outcome of the 300-lap race. Pocono Raceway is a track where aerodynamics and horsepower play important roles. Parker, however, sees where pit strategy could also play a role at the 2.5-mile track.
"If you pit under the green flag, you're really not going to go a lap down because the track is so big," Parker said. "You might be able to short-pit somebody and gain a little track time, where you get clean air out in front and you're running by yourself. Even if you happen to pit when the caution comes out, that can sometimes work to your advantage depending on where you pit. I think a couple of years ago, NASCAR was going to give us a mandatory caution and the #18 team pitted under green just before that and when the caution came out the next lap, they were the leader because everybody else had to pit after that. So, you never know what's going to happen, you just have to be prepared to counter anything that may come up like that type of situation."
