Robby Gordon, owner and driver of the No. 7 Jim Beam Ford Fusion, scored a season-best 10th-place finish last week at Dover in his first race with new crew chief Gene Nead. Gordon, whose best career finish at Pocono is seventh in 2004, says the team has been gaining confidence with its recent strong showings.
ROBBY GORDON -- No. 7 Jim Beam Ford Fusion
IN AUTO RACING, IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUILD MOMENTUM FROM WEEK TO WEEK? "That's a very good question, and I think what teams can build is confidence, and I think that's where momentum comes from, is confidence. But, right now, from switching from car of tomorrow to these cars to different cars to different pieces, different race tracks, different tires, there's so many variables in our sport right now, and the competition level is so competitive -- I think momentum comes with confidence, and I think we're obviously starting to build some confidence here on our team. We had a good run at Charlotte, had a good run at Dover and then we come here and struggle a little bit, and I think it builds the team side of things. If you had driven bad three weeks in a row, it would be like, 'Oh, man, what are we going to do?' But now, it's just like, 'Let's go back to what we ran at Charlotte. Let's try that kind of a set-up' -- not so much the geometry, but spring packages and things like that. They're two different race tracks, which means Pocono, here, there's different things you can do with your front shocks and your front springs. So, we're kind of searching for a sweet spot with our race car. But, one thing I'm happy about is we've found a sweet spot with our car of tomorrow at places like Dover, and I'm sure it's going to work at Bristol, as well."
EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A SHORT WEEK BECAUSE THE RACE AT DOVER WAS RUN ON MONDAY, WHAT WAS THE MOOD AROUND THE SHOP FOLLOWING THAT 10TH-PLACE RUN? "It was a very short week. I think the mood was, all in all, pretty good. We had our normal Monday meeting on Tuesday with all of our guys and just kind of told them the direction of our race team is going, and the things we're doing to make ourselves better week-in and week-out. And, I'm happy, I'm very pleased with where we're at. Obviously, 30th in points is not where we want to be, but if you look, 60 or 70 points is just right there. And, we just need to come out of here with a good finish, and then we're going to go to some race tracks that are going to be very good for us. Michigan is a good place for us. I look forward to going and visiting Ford Motor Company again, it's been a few yeyars since I've been there and spend the day at Ford and I look forward to that next week. And then the Michigan race track has always been a good race track for us."
WHAT CHALLENGES DOES POCONO PRESENT FOR YOU AND THIS TEAM? "Pocono, three different corners. It is the same for every race team -- just completely different corners in three different areas, and that's the challenge that it presents. But everybody has the same challenge, and the competition level is as fierce as it's ever been in Nextel Cup racing. So, you're going to get graded every weekend -- every Sunday or if we race on Monday like we did last weekend, you get a report card, and the report changes week-in and week-out."
ON WHY HE'S LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK'S RACE AT MICHIGAN. "I look forward to going to Michigan because Michigan is back similar to Charlotte, banked race track, we've got a plan for there, we were very fast at Charlotte once the race got underway and I think we're going to be very good when we get to Michigan, as well."
