No. 10
Valvoline Grand Prix driver Johnny Benson is driving "The Honeymoon
Special" - a chassis James Ince designed on his honeymoon in Paris, France,
last winter. The car has earned two sixth place finishes and a seventh this
year in its three starts. Its last appearance was at Richmond in the
Pontiac Excitement 400 where Benson drove to a sixth place result.
No. 14
Conseco Pontiac driver Ron Hornaday comes to Darlington with the chassis he
last raced at Michigan two weeks ago. The Palmdale, California rookie is
hoping to improve on this spring's 42nd place finish here at Darlington - a
race in which he spent more than 100 laps in the garage area making repairs
after an early on-track incident.
No. 18
Bobby Labonte, who won last year's edition of the Southern 500 on his way to
the 2000 Winston Cup championship, returns this weekend with the chassis he
last drove to a 10th place finish at Richmond. Labonte is currently eighth
in the Winston Cup standings, just 103 points behind his teammate Tony
Stewart, who sits fifth.
No. 20
Home Depot Grand Prix driver Tony Stewart, who collected his 12th career win
last weekend at Bristol, is looking for two in a row this week at Darlington
with the chassis he last drove here in the spring. In five previous
Darlington starts, Stewart owns one top five and three top 10 finishes.
No. 27 Since picking up driver Rick Mast, Eel River Racing has qualified the No. 27 Pontiac for four out of five races, which is its best qualifying run since late May. Mast and his teammates tested at Richmond earlier this week before heading to Darlington with the chassis they last ran at Martinsville in April.
No. 36 M&M's Grand Prix driver Ken Schrader ran one lap in this chassis at Dover in June before being involved in a multi-car incident that led to many laps in the garage area and an eventual 36th place finish. Schrader, who is a three-time pole winner here at Darlington, drove to a 13th place finish here in the spring.
