Fort Bragg Visit Inspires Regan Smith for Memorial Day Weekend Race
Regan Smith's Memorial Day race weekend started a little early, as the U.S. Army NASCAR driver made a one-day trip Wednesday to visit troops at Fort Bragg and tour the military base, located in south-central North Carolina.
Joining Smith was his Busch Series crew chief Doug Randolph. The trip was arranged by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
"This was a pretty big day," said Smith, who will pilot the No. 4 U.S. Army Chevrolet in Saturday's Busch Series race at Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte. "We squeezed a whole lot of stuff into the visit.I had a great time visiting with the soldiers and their families. It was also neat to see all the facilities and equipment that is used in training and in battle."
"It really puts into perspective what's going on in the world and what these men and women sacrifice for our freedom," added Smith. "The soldiers inspire me and this visit will give me an extra incentive heading into this weekend's race."
In addition to signing U.S. Army racing autograph cards, posing for photos, and visiting with current and retired soldiers and their families, Smith and Randolph were able to add a few other things to their agenda. They made a tandem jump with the Golden Knights, the U.S. Army parachute team, participated in UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and weapons training simulators, and jumped from a 34-foot tower, which had a mock parachute apparatus attached to a pulley and line.
"I had a blast doing everything today," said Smith, who also co-drives the Army Chevy with Mark Martin in the Nextel Cup Series. "The Golden Knights were incredible and all the soldiers who helped out with each activity were awesome. They really are my heroes."
Smith added, "It's important to remember our soldiers who are protecting our freedom. I'm honored to have had the opportunity to visit Ft. Bragg and hope I can continue to make the soldiers proud of their U.S. Army Chevrolet."
