RICHMOND, Va. (September 7, 2002) - The No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Jimmy Spencer was involved in an accident on lap 8 of the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond International Raceway that relegated the team to a 42nd place finish. Spencer remains in 26th place in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points.
Spencer started the event in 30th position, but was caught up in the accident on lap 8, which also involved teammate Sterling Marlin and the No. 99 car of Jeff Burton.
"The 99 car spun out and I got him from behind," Spencer said following the accident. "A lot of cars started slowing down, me included. Me and Sterling were both going for the million, and I think we had a really good car. I wish we could have made a run for the money. I understand Sterling hit me, but I think his brakes locked up or something. It's hard to see through these cars, and we did everything we could. The track was a little on the slick side and it took both of the Ganassi Dodges out.
"I thought we had a good car. It was really fast on old tires, and that's really important here. Tires are critical anywhere now. I felt really good about it tonight, but it's just one of them deals. We didn't get a chance to show what we had tonight."
Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 DeWalt Chevrolet, won the Chevy Monte Carlo 400. Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the New Hampshire 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway on September 15, 2002.
