Marlin remains in Winston Cup championship points lead.
RICHMOND, Va. (September 7, 2002) - Sterling Marlin, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T, was involved in an early accident in the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond International Speedway leaving him with a 43rd place finish. Although, Marlin did not complete the race, he remains the leader in the NASCAR Winston Cup championship points standings.
Marlin started the race in 32nd position and had moved up a few positions before getting in the accident on lap 8 which also involved teammate Jimmy Spencer and the No. 99 car of Jeff Burton.
"We started in the back in the spring and got away with it, but we didn't make it tonight," Marlin said after coming out of the infield care center. "It's really too bad because we wanted to make a run for that million dollar bonus. I'm not sure what happened. I saw Jimmy Spencer spin, and I tried to miss him but we got together.
"We've got 10 races left, and I guess it's going to be really tight after tonight. Jeff (Gordon) had some trouble, and it seems like when one of us has problems the other one does, too. We'll just do the best we can every week from here on out like we've been doing all season, add 'em up at Homestead and see where we stack up."
Marlin did have some minor injuries following the accident in Turn 3.
"Sterling has a chest contusion right in the middle of his chest and muscle spasms in both shoulders but no broken bones," said Al Shuford, Team Trainer. "He's just got a couple of bruises and a couple of muscle spasms. It's a long season, and Sterling has been very good about the things we've asked him to do to get in shape."
Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 DeWalt Chevrolet, won the Chevy Monte Carlo 400. Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light team is the New Hampshire 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway on September 15, 2002.
