ROAD TO RICHMOND: CHASE FOR THE NASCAR NEXTEL CUP CONTINUES TO HEAT UP
It All Leads Up to "One Last Race to Make The Chase"
Richmond, VA (August 29, 2007)--Now that the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series has completed 24 of the 36 races on the schedule, there is only one event before the final race before the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup--the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday, September 8 "under the lights." After that race, only those in the top 12 driver points will be eligible for a shot at the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, rendering the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 "One Last Race to Make The Chase."
Five drivers have already clinched their spot in The Chase. Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards are locked in and have a shot at the championship. Under the revised rules of The Chase, the drivers are re-seeded according to number of wins through the first 26 races. That means that Gordon would be at the top with a series-leading four wins. Should Jimmie Johnson make The Chase (he is currently sixth), he would be at the top with Gordon at four wins. Stewart is just behind them with three wins.
If The Chase ended today, the remainder of the field would be set with Jeff Burton, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch. So that leaves a few drivers on the outside looking in, including Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (13th), Ryan Newman (14th) and Greg Biffle (15th).
Below are the current top 14 drivers in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Race to the Chase (prior to race at California Speedway) scheduled to compete in the 2007 Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway and their NASCAR NEXTEL CUP and Busch Series performances in past events at Richmond International Raceway.
