Rookie Conway Likes the Best of Both Worlds at Richmond

Home-State Raceway Is Short Track with Big Speed

Statesville, N.C. (April 27, 2010) - Kevin Conway knows the fans at Richmond International Raceway come to see a great show, and his No. 38 ExtenZe Racing Ford team is ready to be a part of it. The leader in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year campaign is gearing up for the Heath Calhoun 400 at Richmond International Raceway in his home state of Virginia.

Just a few days after being initiated to the superspeedway circuit with a solid 30th-place finish at Talladega (Ala.), Conway and his ExtenZe Racing team are ready to run at the racy short track.

Conway heads to Richmond with one start under his belt at the .75-mile D-shaped oval, which came in 2007 in the Nationwide Series. He started 39th but went on to finish 43rd after an unfortunate crash took him out just 36 laps into the scheduled 252-lap event. Conway also heads to Richmond coming off his eighth consecutive Rookie of the Race award and now leads fellow Cup Series rookie competitor Terry Cook in the rookie race by 61 points (88-27).

ExtenZe Racing Driver Kevin Conway Comments on Richmond International Raceway:

"I like Richmond because it's probably one of the most fun short tracks we go to. You have an outside groove that comes in early in the race, and you also obviously have the bottom groove. If your car is handling well, you can get up on the outside of somebody and run and make passes on the outside as well as the inside.

"You get down into Turns 1 and 2 and it's a big, sweeping arc into Turn 1 and it's a tight exit off of Turn 2. So as you get down into Turn 1, it's a great place to make passes, but you still have to make sure you can keep the car turning enough that you can get off of Turn 2. It narrows up significantly around there and you seem to have a lot of issues on the exit of Turn 2.

"Turn 3 is pretty straightforward. As you get down into the corner, it's a little bit of a sharper entry, which makes for a little more interesting short-track racing, because if you get into somebody right there, it's really easy to turn them around. The rest of the racetrack is very racy. You have two grooves, and the outside groove is almost as fast as the bottom. It's definitely one of the best short tracks of the year.

"I think Richmond International Raceway is very fan friendly. It just puts on some great wheel-to-wheel short-track racing. There's a lot of beating and banging. The way the configuration of the track is, it's conducive to high speeds, but you still have the full-contact, short-track action.

"The race is in my home state of Virginia, so it's a bit of a homecoming for me. There are a lot of other great drivers from the state of Virginia - Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton and some other guys. Everybody in the Southeast, they love stock-car racing, and it doesn't get any better than the racing at Richmond International Raceway."
