Late Race Engine Problems Costly For Riggs

RICHMOND, Va. (May 15, 2004) - Just as Scott Riggs looked to be closing in on a season-high finish, a late race engine problem forced the Valvoline team to retire early from the Chevy American Revolution 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

With 59 laps remaining in the 400-lap event, the No. 10 Valvoline Chevrolet erupted in smoke as Riggs piloted the machine into Turns 1 and 2 of the .75-mile asphalt oval.

"Something let go in the motor," said Riggs, who was credited with a 35th place finish. "Hendrick Motorsports has given us awesome horsepower week after week. Every once in awhile you're going to have something like that happen."

Riggs, who was running 15th when the costly incident took place, was working his way back through the field after falling to the rear and loosing a lap early in the race. The Valvoline team made appropriate adjustments to the No. 10 car and Riggs worked his way to the front on the following restart, staying there until the next caution flag waved.

"We were real loose in the beginning, but were starting to work our way back -- picking off cars one at a time," explained Riggs. "We got back on the lead lap by passing the leaders on the restart and we were fast -- really making gains. We kept making adjustments to the Valvoline Chevy and had it where we could really race. We had a lot more in us-- I just hate that something like this happened."

"I think we're just starting to show our potential with this team," continued Riggs. "That's what makes you feel good. You know you're going in the right direction and making good adjustments. I can't say enough about these guys -- they did a great job all night."
