Rudd Rebuffs McReynolds' Offer for RPM By Dave Rodman
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (April 16, 1999) Larry McReynolds is still pondering whether to remain with Richard Childress' team. NASCAR Winston Cup Series crew chief Larry McReynolds, who is angling towards starting his own race team even while he engineers Mike Skinner's quest for a series championship, confirmed Friday that he and partner John Dangler made an offer to Ricky Rudd to purchase the owner/driver's operation.
Following Bud Pole Qualifying Friday for Sunday's Goody's Body Pain 500 at Martinsville Speedway, McReynolds said Rudd had declined the offer to sell his team, Rudd Performance Motorsports, to the veteran race mechanic and Dangler, an experienced PR professional.
"We had heard that Ricky Rudd was interested in selling his race team," McReynolds said while taking a break from overseeing the preparation of Skinner's Lowe's Chevrolet. "John Dangler and I are trying to start a team, as everyone knows."
"If there was an opportunity to purchase his operation, we certainly wanted to explore that, so we made Ricky an offer for his team. He thought about it and he decided he wanted to continue as a NASCAR Winston Cup team owner," McReynolds said.
Rudd had already left the .526-mile track and was unavailable for comment.
McReynolds has said that he needs to set a deadline to make a decision on whether he is committed to running his own team in 2000, or whether he will remain with Richard Childress Racing, which runs teams for Skinner and seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt.
"We're still looking at late May to early June before we have to make that decision," McReynolds said of his self-imposed 'drop dead' date to move ahead with a plan to field a competitive effort for the season-opening 2000 Daytona 500. Speedweeks commences with pre-event test sessions at the "World Center of Racing," Daytona International Speedway, in January.
