Riggs To Take Part in Eagle One-Shav Glick Award Presentation

FONTANA, Calif (April 28, 2004) -- Scott Riggs, driver of the No. 10 Valvoline Chevrolet in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, will have the honor of being part of the Eagle One-Shav Glick Award presentation during Sunday's pre-race festivities at California Speedway.

The award is a symbol of distinguished achievement in motorsports by a Californian.

Presented by Eagle One car-care products, a division of The Valvoline Company, the award is named in honor of Shav Glick, the venerable motorsports writer of the Los Angeles Times.

The 2004 recipient of the award is Les Richter, a motorsports executive whose name is synonymous with auto racing in Southern California.

Other nominees were: Don Prudhomme (drag racing star), Joe Leonard (motorcycle and open-wheel champion), Chris Pook (motorsports executive and founder of the Long Beach Grand Prix) and Roger Ward (2-time Indianapolis 500 winner).

"Les Richter and Shav Glick are two motorsports icons," said Riggs. "Their work, dedication and passion have helped grow auto racing to where it is today. I am sincerely thankful for their contributions and it will be an honor to take part in the presentation."

Previous winners of the Eagle One-Shav Glick Award were: Dan Gurney, Wally Parks, Parnelli Jones and Rick Mears.

After a Hall of Fame football career in college at the University of California and in the pros with the Los Angeles Rams, Richter became manager and operator of Riverside International Raceway for 23 years before leaving in 1983 to become a vice president of NASCAR.

Richter and Bill France Sr. were responsible for NASCAR moving west to Riverside and helping the then Southeast-oriented racing organization become a national entity.

In 1994 Richter returned to Southern California to oversee construction of California Speedway in Fontana for Roger Penske. He is currently vice president of special projects for International Speedway Corp., which obtained control of California Speedway from Penske in 1999. He is also chairman of the board for the International Race of Champions (IROC).

Affectionally known as "Coach" -- from his days coaching an Army football team while stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. and later as a player/coach with the Rams -- Richter resides in Riverside, Calif. with his wife Marilyn. He is the father of a son, Jon, and daughter, Anne.
