GORDON LOOKS FOR EIGHTH SEASON VICTORY, FIFTH AT ROCKINGHAM

CONCORD, N.C.– Last year's fall trip to North Carolina Speedway was quite a triumphant one for Jeff Gordon. Not only did Gordon drive his DuPont Automotive Finishes Chevrolet to his 12th win of the season, and not only did he sweep the races at Rockingham for 1998, but he clinched his third NASCAR Winston Cup championship in four years. "What a day that was," said Gordon "However, we're not in the same position going into this Sunday's race at Rockingham that we were last year. "First of all, last year's race was the second-before-last of the season and we were contending for the championship. This year, there will still be three events remaining after Rockingham and it's Dale Jarrett's championship to lose." Gordon's success at Rockingham did not come all in one day. In a total of 13 starts at the 1.017-mile oval, Gordon has four wins, one pole, and five top-five finishes. In fact, Gordon has won three of the last five races at here. "We've had our share of success at Rockingham," said Gordon. "We're going back there this weekend looking for a win. That's our goal for the remainder of the season – to win races." Gordon and his team of Rainbow Warriors have seven victories in 1999, more than any other driver. Even after the tribunal change of chiefs, the No. 24 team has two wins under the direction of Brian Whitesell. The Whitesell era kicked off in Martinsville, just three races ago. However, Gordon/Whitesell are two-for-three. "I'm not surprised a bit," said Gordon. "Ray Evernham built this team into what it is today and Brian has been there from the beginning, working side-by-side with Ray. "Brian and I have always worked well together and our communication as driver and crew chief has been great." In addition to the most wins, Gordon has the most poles (seven) and has led more times for more laps than any other driver. He has 18 top-five's, 19 top-10's and is currently fourth in the Winston Cup points standings, 434 behind leader Jarrett.
