Roush plans multi-faceted resolutions HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Dec. 30, 1998) With 1999 right around the corner, people across the country are making New Year's resolutions, and the members of Roush Racing are no different. Drivers, crew chiefs and even team owner Jack Roush are going to try to make the most of the new year. Mark Martin, driver of the Valvoline/Cummins Ford Taurus, is going to try to cut back on his swearing. He does not intend to cut it out all together, however, "just to cut back."
Jimmy Fennig, Martin's crew chief, hopes to spend more time with his children, Alexandria and Joey.
"I enjoy hitting golf balls at the driving range with Joey," Fennig said. "He's only seven, but if I can get him to the PGA, he can support me when I retire from racing."
Jeff Burton, driver of the Exide Batteries Taurus, intends to be in better physical shape in 1999 than he was this year. Burton adds, for the benefit of his fitness conscious teammate, "Please make sure Mark (Martin) sees this."
Frank Stoddard, Burton's crew chief, hopes to get in less trouble with Roush in the new year than he did throughout the past year.
Kevin Lepage, driver of the PRIMESTAR Taurus, plans to watch less cable and more PRIMESTAR. Johnny Benson, driver of the Cheerios Taurus, intends to spend more time with his family, while his new crew chief, Bobby Leslie, plans on having his Christmas shopping done in time next year so he will have more time to think of a resolution.
Jeff Hammond, crew chief of the John Deere Taurus, hopes the new year will bring better finishes for Chad Little and the team. Hammond also hopes that if the car does get damaged, they resolve to damage the rear end rather than the front end, so Little could still drive it. Little could not be reached for comment on the subject.
Last but certainly not least, Roush has made a resolution of his own for 1999.
"I hope to be one of the owners who keeps himself out of the eye of the storm next year," said Roush, who took center stage with his role in the "tire controversy" in the summer of 1998.
As with all New Year's resolutions, some work out for the best and others are forgotten by the time the NASCAR Winston Cup Series returns to Daytona International Speedway in February for Speedweeks 1999.
In the case of Roush Racing, only time will tell.
