Schrader seeks to keep The Winston record

CONCORD, N.C. (May 13, 1998) If he can just get into Saturday night's all-star event, he knows he can make something happen. Why?

Because Ken Schrader holds the record for the highest average finish (5.1) for The Winston.

In his seven starts, he has finished fourth or better six times. But this year, he must win The Winston Open in the No. 33 Skoal Bandit Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo as the winner is the only driver to advance to the all-star event.

"With only one transfer spot for The Winston, The Winston Open is going to be one heck of a race," Schrader said. " We ran good in The Open last year, but we ran out of laps in the end. I am looking forward to the new qualifying format. I always look forward to another race."

This weekend, Schrader will utilize "Jonnie Ringo" which is the same car the team ran during the Coca-Cola 600 in 1997. It led 14 laps before the motor expired after 231 laps.

"We are optimistic about our chances of advancing to The Winston, " said Andy Petree, car owner/crew chief of the Skoal Bandit Racing Chevrolet.

"We tested here a couple of weeks ago and had one of the fastest cars. Schrader gets around Charlotte real well and we're bringing back one of our best cars."
