IMPALA SS ON THE TRACK -- INFINEON RACEWAY: Team Chevy drivers have won 9 of 20 previous NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) races at Infineon Raceway, more than any other manufacturer
Jeff Gordon, No. 24 DuPont Impala SS holds the record for the most wins - five (5)
TEAM CHEVY IMPALA SS -- FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT AT INFINEON RACEWAY:
TONY STEWART: ON WINNING AT INFINEON: "You've just got to have a good handling car. Aerodynamics are not the least bit important at Sonoma, which is great because it's one of the few tracks that we go to that we don't have to worry about aero balance or anything like that. It's just a matter of keeping a well-balanced car all day and having good pit stops and pit strategy and staying out of trouble.
"A lot can happen at Sonoma. You've got to be patient all day. You get a lot of cautions there and a lot of guys end up beating and banging on each other. I mean, the cars look like they've been to a race at Martinsville (Va.) because it's a short road course. Save that car for the last 20 laps because that's the critical time. Do what you have to do to get through the first 90 laps, but those last 20 are the ones when you really have to go, and you need your car to be in one piece to make it happen."
JEFF GORDON: ON DOUBLE FILE RESTARTS AT INFINEON: "I'm anxious to get through it and see how it works out. I think Pocono and Michigan were two good tracks for NASCAR to try out the double-file restart rule, but I think it's going to create some havoc here.
"The drivers may need to rethink how we've raced in the past. We're going to need to figure out how to get through the first set of corners on each double- file restart. But, at the same time, we're going to be battling even harder and more intense for each position. And sometimes that leads to more mistakes and more accidents. Then off the track, our crew chiefs are also going to have work through some interesting scenarios with pit strategy."
JIMMIE JOHNSON: ON SAVING FUEL AT SONOMA, AND IS THERE AN ADVANTAGE TO PITTING EARLY THE FIRST TIME AROUND? "Really, Sonoma boils down to luck. The rules are so tight and the fuel cells are all the same. The amount of fuel that they pick up is the same. It's really tough to get an advantage. The only thing you can do there is gamble on the number of caution laps. It kind of boils down to how brave are you going to be and how much risk are you willing to take? And that's the thing that gets us each year. We've been more of a conservative route and worried about a lot of green-flag racing, and we'd pit a lap or two after the big crowd comes and it just hasn't worked out for us and we're back in traffic. So it really is a gamble. If you talk to Kyle Busch from last year, they were on pit road and luckily caught a caution. And then something else worked out for the second one. It just went their way. You know they had a fast car, but they were deep in traffic and the cautions fell their way."
