SONOMA, Calif. (June 27, 2004)-- Scott Riggs collected a 42nd-place finish in Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, the first road-course competition of his Nextel Cup career.
Starting from the 40th position, Riggs hoped to learn something at the 1.99-mile road course, but was forced to retire prematurely after trouble on the race track put the Valvoline Chevrolet out of the race early.
"We didn't have the qualifying effort we had hoped for," said Riggs, who used his second provisional starting spot of the season. "I was coming from the back today, and I was really trying to buy my time and learn a little while I was out there.
"We were tight going through the corners at the beginning of the race and the back end of the Valvoline Chevy kept wanting to snap loose. We got a little free in one of the turns and the 8 car (Earnhardt, Jr.) tapped us. That sent us spinning and we were forced to pit, putting us down a lap."
Shortly after Riggs returned to the track, he reported to the crew that a gear had broken in the 10 car, giving the team no option but to go behind the wall for repairs.
"The guys rallied and got the gear changed in great time," explained Riggs. "I went back out on the track, hoping to stay out of the way and learn more from everyone around me, but not long after I got there, we found ourselves in more trouble."
On Lap 71 of 110, the Valvoline Chevrolet made hard contact with the Turn 10 wall, an accident that resulted in a damaged oil line, and ultimately, the end of the day for the Valvoline team.
"We obviously didn't do as well as we'd hoped," continued Riggs. "This was our first trip to Infineon and our first time competing on a road course. We're going to take what we learned this weekend and use it to better ourselves in the future. Now, we're going to look ahead and focus on getting a solid finish next week in Daytona."
The Nextel Cup Series will compete at Daytona International Speedway in Saturday night's Pepsi 400.
