Square D joins another Wallace for Daytona 500
DAYTONA BEACH (Feb. 14, 1998)
During the Bud Shootout, it was Square D Ford driver Kenny Wallace who helped older brother Rusty to victory. In Sunday's Daytona 500, middle brother Mike will lend a helping hand to youngest brother Kenny.
Mike, who will be driving Phil Barkdoll's Chevrolet, will represent Square D, X1-R Performance Lubricants, and Trane Air Conditioning in the 40th running of the Daytona 500.
"I'm thrilled," Mike said. "If I could help anyone, I'd want it to be Kenny. I'm certainly disappointed for him, because I know failing to qualify for any race is a gut-wrenching experience."
Mike, 38, originally came to Daytona Speedweeks to compete in the ARCA race. But after Phil Barkdoll failed to post a competitive Bud Pole Qualifying speed, the 60-year-old Iowan tapped Mike to driver the No. 73 in his Gatorade 125-Mile Qualifying Race. After Wallace finished 12th, Barkdoll turned the driving duties over to him for Sunday's 40th annual "Great American Race."
"We simply shook hands on the deal," Barkdoll said. "While I might own the car, it's Mike's to drive in the race. I'm very happy to have Mike, Square D, Trane and X1-R on board with us for the 500."
This year's Daytona 500 marks the seventh time Barkdoll has qualified for the Daytona 500.
